Last weekend was the 5th round of the 2024 Hungarian National Rally Championship, the II WHB Győr Rally, which was the penultimate round of the season. Miklós Csomós and Attila Nagy, the leading pair of the championship, naturally had victory in mind in order to get as close as possible to their first ever absolute championship title, and the signs were encouraging, as the Mixi’s won this round very confidently last year.
The Győr weekend started on Thursday with a track briefing and a test at Rábaring, which was useful not only to move the car but also to practice the track, as this stage was on the programme. On Friday, the remaining stages were written and in the evening, the pairs rolled across the podium in front of many rally fans at a ceremonial start ceremony in Győr’s Dunakapu Square.
Saturday was a very eventful day. It was the first time in a long time that the field had to fight their way through four different races in one day. The menu. The first round started flawlessly for Mixi and his team, 4 out of 4 successes, and in the light of this they managed to build an encouraging lead over their main rivals. After a 30 minute service, the afternoon show was on, with three stage wins and additional seconds added to the lead. At the end of the day, they had a 21-second lead over the Germans, 34 seconds over the Velenzeys and 43 seconds over the Turans.
Csomós M. – Nagy A.:
“We pushed in vain, but we couldn’t get the last fast lap, so we could “only” win seven of the eight stages today. It was a flawless day, we really enjoyed it from the inside, but we can’t make any mistakes tomorrow either if we want to keep our lead. Thanks for all the cheers from the sidelines!”
Five stages remain on Sunday. The opening Bakonybél – Kőris-hegy had never been in the history of Hungarian rallying, while the Ravazd – Tényő and the Győr city speedway were more familiar to the pairs. On the second day, Gábor Német and his team got new strength and kept coming closer, but Mixi and his team managed their lead well and even managed to go for a bit of a sight on the city rapid. In addition, the Mixi’s took back the lead for the Powert Stage, ending the weekend with a maximum score of 35 points. The weekend’s battle of Csomós versus German was illustrated by the 12th speedway, where the two sides were within a tenth of each other!
The Mixi’s commented after the race. On the first day we were able to set a good pace of our own, which gave us a lead that we were able to share today, maybe we still had a few seconds left, but the main thing, which was the goal, was to come out of this race without a scratch.
After scoring maximum points, the Mixis were able to increase their lead in the championship, but the advantage is not a cause for complete relaxation, as the Turans, the Velenczei and the German Gábor can also be champions in the season-closing race, where 50 points are still up for grabs, as the race with odds of one to two will be held in Zemplén from 25-27 October.
